A recently released book about the ongoing situation in Syria is Burning Country: Syrians in Revolution and War by Robin Yassin-Kassab and Leila Al-Shami. It is a very informative read.
What a terrible situation that the Assad regime has plunged the people of Syria into.
Truly it is just the most terrible thing for a government to attack and murder en masse its own people. That is what the armed forces of the Assad regime did to Syria and thus provoked an armed insurgency in response. The Assad regime brought on this catastrophe upon itself but all Syrians are suffering for their failure to maintain legitimacy in the nation.
But the insurgents were merely fighters while the Assad regime had a vast army. To call it a civil war gives the unfortunate connotation that there are two equal sides but that is simply not the case at all.
Also revealed that many Free Syrians launched a courageous and heroic uprising against the terrorists of ISIL in January 2014.
I see no hope that the current Russian intervention in Syria will lead to peace. It has already led to much death and destruction already.
It is just the most ghastly situation that is presently occurring in Syria. The Syrian people do not deserve this. The long suffering Syrian people deserve to live in peace and safety. May their dreams of freedom soon be fulfilled.
