One terrible thing about racism is that it is a very simple idea. Insiders/Outsiders. Us/Them. And because it is so simple it can taint everything else great and small: society, governmental policies, the demographics of a neighborhood, the architecture, even punctuation marks.
It has recently come to public attention that Neo-Nazi extremists have started using parentheses "((( )))" to demonize and intimidate Jews.
We must always stand against the vile hatred that is anti-Semitism.
This is really disturbing to a person who was raised as a Messianic Jew (Armstrongite) and who has had many Jewish friends throughout his lifetime. And, this was not to the exclusion of others. My friends have come from many backgrounds.
ReplyDeleteI beleve this hatred is rooted in certain people not having the natural talents and abilities to realize their dreams of wealth and status, and then turning in resentment and hatred against ethnic groups who have had a high percentage of over-achievers amongst their ranks. Racists are generally very ignorant people, whose hold on life and its rewards are tenuous at best.

I vaguely heard about a few days ago but I wasn't really paying attention to it. Then I took a look and found myself amazed at how such an innocuous looking punctuation could be imbued with such hatred and paranoia. It is disgusting.
