In recent months U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry made trips to the Middle East to, in part, discuss the rise and expansion of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. While there, he called for a resumption of Israeli–Palestinian Authority peace negotiations. After his return, he spoke at a State Department ceremony to mark the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha, which celebrates the end of the Hajj pilgrimage (yes, really!). ...John Kerry is Catholic.
It’s not surprising that Arab Muslim leaders would make such a case, but it is deeply troubling that the American secretary would fall in line with such rhetoric—especially while promoting an Islamic holiday in the same breath! (Tom Robinson, Is Israel the Obstacle to Middle East Peace?, January 12, 2015.)
How can UCG's leaders accuse Kerry of "promoting" a festival of the Islamic religion when John Kerry happens to be Catholic?
Would UCG's leaders accuse John Kerry of "promoting" Judaism if he attended a Jewish festival? Would UCG accuse John Kerry of "promoting" Protestantism if he attended a festival celebrated by Protestants?
