The COGs are Unknown and Insignificant to the World

Back in 2008 Lee Marsden wrote a book entitled For God's Sake: The Christian Right and US Foreign Policy. It is a critique of some religious right wing groups in the United States.

Guess who is never mentioned in this book. Herbert Armstrong. Roderick C. Meredith. Gerald Flurry. And everyone else associated with Armstrongism. The COGs are never mentioned in this book. Not even once.

This is because HWA completely failed to tell the world that he was God's man. And his little imitators have been completely helpless in getting attention from the rest of the world.

Constantly the ministers of the COGs tell themselves and their followers that they have a connection with God that no one else in the world has. They say nothing is more important then being in the true church.  Here are just a few examples from PCG. (Links are to previous posts.)
When Lamentations was published in Judah, they had reached the point of no return. Israel has just about reached that point now. It will soon be too late to repent, if it’s not already. The ONLY HOPE for Israel is our message. May God help them to heed before it’s too late. (Gerald Flurry, Lamentations and the End-Time Laodiceans, 1993, p. 12.)

Our Father is the Head of that wonderful, majestic God family. Our number-one passion must be to declare Him and His family! (Gerald Flurry, The Key of David, 2002, 2005, 2010, 2011, Chapter 6, p. 65.)

We can’t get bogged down in this present world. We must cling to the vision of God’s future world! ... God wants us to set our affection on those things that are above—not on the things of this world. God wants us to be passionately into the Work of His PCG. God wants your mind—you individually—to make His Work your greatest delight. Then your future will be magnificent!
“When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory” (Colossians 3:4).
This is the reward that we never, ever want to forget! (Gerald Flurry, Colossians: First Century Parallels, Chapter 3, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2010, 2013, p. 28.)
But despite the many sacrifices PCG members make after reading words like these they can't even get themselves mentioned in a book like this.

PCG's Sympathy for the Rich and Opposition Against AG Lynch

Back in 2014 PCG's Joel Hilliker wrote an article in which he condemned "cursing the rich business leaders" seemingly having no sympathy for the vast suffering inflicted upon the American people caused by acts some of these "rich business leaders" from 2007 onwards.
Cursing the leaders, speaking ill of the government, even cursing the rich business leaders—these are hallmarks of American democracy. Any mistake the president or other public official makes, the press attacks with piranha-like ferocity. The lead-up to elections are particularly brutal, as people on all sides smear candidates and candidates smear one another.

Is democracy really more godly than a monarchy? (Joel Hilliker, The Office, December 8, 2014.)
Maybe some of those "rich business leaders" were being cursed for a good reason.

Just now several big banks have been fined billions of dollars for fixing foreign exchange of currencies.

Here are some remarks by Attorney General Lynch about this sordid affair.

Incidentally PCG opposed Loretta Lynch's nomination as Attorney General. They absurdly fear mongered that her confirmation would fuel the protests against police brutality carefully ignoring how the actions of some police officers have provoked these events.
An African-American heritage is not the only thing outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder shares with the Obama administration’s nominated replacement. When President Barack Obama nominated Loretta Lynch on November 8 as the next attorney general, he selected Holder’s ideological double. Both Holder and Lynch espouse the same radical racial prejudices that now stoke the flames of race riots in the United States.

Lynch is currently the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. President Obama noted that she “might be the only lawyer in America who battles mobsters, and drug lords and terrorists, and still has a reputation for being a charming people person.” Over the 15 years she has worked in the Justice Department, Lynch has earned a “non-partisan,” “independent” reputation—prosecuting high-profile Republicans and Democrats alike, U.S. corporations, Asian gangs and al Qaeda operatives. ...

Her probable confirmation, unfortunately, will mean more Fergusons, more racial prejudice, more race riots—not less. Wittingly or unwittingly, the racial ideology Holder and Lynch share does not help America’s race problems. In some cases, it legitimizes them. (Anthony Chibarirwe, Ferguson Is Only the Beginning if Loretta Lynch Replaces Eric Holder, December 4, 2014.)
What claptrap. As though people would go on the streets just because she became Attorney General.

Overview of the May-June 2015 Issue of Tomorrow's World

(Warning: The cover of this issue, showing some innocent victims about to be executed, may be disturbing to some people.)

The latest issue of LCG's recruitment magazine, Tomorrow's World, is now out. Let us see what LCG's leaders have to say to try and convince people to join LCG.

This issue on its cover contains the grisly photo of people about to be executed by a violent jihadist group in Libya. I am highly disgusted that LCG's "leaders" chose to stick a photo of those dreadful murders on the cover of their magazine. So often LCG's "leaders" moan and condemn violent movies and tell people they don't need to watch those violent movies. The violence in movies is imaginary. The image shown on this issues cover is real. This is very hypocritical for them to use this image on the cover of their recruitment magazine.

This issue reports to have a circulation of 497,000. This is an slight increase from the March-April issue (487,000), the January-February issue (492,000), the November-December 2014 issue (472,000), the September-October 2014 issue (458,000) and the July-August 2014 issue (457,000).

A circulation of 497,000 is a lot more than PCG's Philadelphia Trumpet's current circulation of 297,242 for its July 2015 issue. Back in 2011 in an article which was discussed in a previous post Stephen Flurry belittled LCG for having an income of "about $13.5 million" in 2009 while in 2010 PCG enjoyed an annual income of "$20.6 million". But today it seems that LCG's recruitment magazine has a far higher circulation even though PCG has more money. What on Earth is PCG doing wrong?

Roderick C. Meredith has a personal article boasting that his "world" (meaning belief in Armstrongism) will supplant mainstream society and became the mainstream culture itself once Christ returns.

Roderick C. Meredith also has an article that simplistically describes Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi's lackeys as being motivated by religion ignoring the many other issues that fueled its rise (Sunni Iraqis' fear of Shiite militias and the Baghdad government, Abu Bakr al Baghdadi's lackeys' ability to fund themselves and pay their lackeys, access to illicit oil, exploiting the situation in Syria, widespread desperation for employment, etc.) and talks about "the power of religion" and how it can be used for good or ill. He also fear mongers about Europe rising up to power.

Stuart Wachowitz has a little article praising the utility of marshes.

Richard Ames has an article describing how empires rise and fall. All this is to introduce the reader to Armstrongism's teaching that Europe will soon conquer America but that Christ will soon return after that.

Adam West has a little article describing the Battle of Waterloo's role in the rise of the British Empire.

Wallace Smith has an article talking about advanced computers.

The Q and A assures the reader that Christians (meaning LCG members) are allowed alcohol.

Douglas Winnail has a little article fear mongering that wars are about to get a lot worse. Douglas Winnail does that a lot.

Roger Meyer has a little article telling people to be positive. Maybe if LCG members didn't tithe so much maybe they would be more able to be positive about life.

Jonathan McNair has a little article telling LCG youth that learning the intricacies of Armstrongism is great fun. Unfortunately for everyone concerned Armstrongism is largely built on nonsense.

Richard Franz has a little article fear mongering that cheap oil may bring trouble.

There are letters as well. Here is one of them.
I have been following this ministry for a year now, and I thank God for your free literature. I have been in a “false” religion, thinking I was doing what the Father of Abraham wanted me to do.
Then do not join LCG or any other group associated with Armstrongism. Armstrongism is largely based on nonsense. They do not know the future. The Americans are not the descendants of Israel which an idea (British Israelism) which has been proven untrue. This doctrine is inherited from British Israelism. Silenced.co has shown how British Israelism is built on a foundation of sand. In fact DNA evidence refutes British Israelism.
These false doctrines, holidays and man-made rituals made me unaware of the Bible’s true message!
They did not. Rather this person was simply unaware of Armstrongism until he or she had the misfortune of listening to LCG seriously. But LCG likes to teach that anything contrary to their practice was maliciously created by Satan the Devil for the sole purpose of keeping him or her out of LCG. That is nonsense.
It is only after I began to read your literature that I began to “open” my eyes.
His or her eyes were not opened. Rather LCG's words just seem persuasive but that does not make them true. In all likelihood this person has no idea of the painful and sordid history of Armstrongism or that the leader of LCG, Roderick C. Meredith, personally destroyed many marriages as part of HWA's "divorce and remarriage" policy.
I continue to pray for God’s Truth. Your invaluable article entitled: “Will God Bless You and Your Finances?” was truly an eye-opener! Bless you all!
LCG's "leaders" get their money by ordering their followers to pay them three tithes. None of this "free literature" is actually free. Because they anticipate that at least enough readers will take it seriously that they will begin to financially contribute on a regular basis and eventually pay the three tithes. LCG uses tithing in order to get your money. I hope this person does not give it to them.

And so this issue comes to an end. Once again LCG's "leaders" has created yet another issue designed to convince people to sent the three tithes to LCG. This is how LCG's 1% get their money.

PCG Writer Intimidated by "SOUR" Women on Magazine Covers

Get a load of this from a 2008 article entitled "Fathers: Teach Your Daughter About True Beauty". Not everything in here is wrong but take a look at this.
How often do you remind your daughter that the most beautiful thing about her is her SMILE? My daughter is only 3 years old, but as a music professional, I’ve dealt with MANY young female performers who are afraid to smile—along with a number of other insecurities. I know society has deceived them, and it stirs me as a parent to do everything I can to combat those influences.
And how does he combat such influences? We shall see very soon. We now continue. Immediately afterwards he says:
What does society tell our girls about smiling? How many “beautiful” women grace magazine covers with SOUR looks on their faces? Our rock stars, rappers and dancers have to look angry. It’s meant to be seductive or sexy, but as a man and father, I’m troubled by it. Not only is it intimidating, it’s not nearly as pretty.
Give me a break! I can't believe this. The writer of this article is intimidated by women on magazine covers who, in his mind, look "SOUR".

He says "it is intimidating". Which means he is intimidated by them. He is intimidated by photos of women on magazine covers. Not real women mind you. He is intimidated by the photos of women on magazine covers.

And he thinks the women on these magazine covers look "SOUR". I can't believe he thinks they look "SOUR". That thought has never occurred to me in my entire life. I am astonished that is what he thinks when he sees these magazine covers.

I cannot help but wonder if his mind has been warped by the narrow way Armstrongism defines women's role in family life.

But there's more. Immediately afterwards he says:
Teach your daughter that she exudes beauty when she has a positive attitude and expression on her face. My young ["3 years old"] daughter must be taught that when she is in a foul mood, she is acting “ugly.” I don’t care what the self-esteem gurus say; our daughters need to know when they aren’t pretty. I know that using that terminology is going to register more of a reaction. When she is happy and smiling, I make it a point to tell her how beautiful she is when she acts that way.
So he calls a three year old girl "ugly" when she "is in a foul mood".

And he does this because "I know that using that terminology is going to register more of a reaction."

I cannot believe that he thinks that is a good idea.

Hasn't he ever heard of anorexia or bulimia? I would not wish such terrible things on anyone. That may seem like an extreme thought but I will not hide that that is what I immediately thought about hearing that he calls a three year old girl "ugly" in order to get "more of a reaction" from her.

Well, now we know what the writer thinks when he sees magazine covers with women of a certain look on them and that he calls his three year old daughter "ugly" in order to get "more of a reaction" from her. And that PCG members read this thinking they are getting great advice.

I cannot believe any good could possibly come out of this.

PCG Says Osama bin Laden was Right to Condemn America's Sins

When Osama bin Laden led Al Qaeda to commit their monstrous act of mass murder on September 11, 2001, many people were murdered by the foul murderer. Many people were shocked and appalled and yearned to stand up against him. To this day many cannot fathom how people can be so cruel and heartless.

And what did PCG's 1% do? They said Osama bin Laden condemned America for her sins. PCG's leaders said Osama bin Laden was right to condemn America for her sins.

PCG agreed with Osama bin Laden that America is sinful.

They said the sins of America allowed Osama bin Laden to commit 9/11 thus blaming the victims for causing this act of mass murder to occur.
These sins and many others are the reasons why God did not protect our nation from that terrorist attack. (Carl Hilliker, The Iraq Campaign and American Hypocrisy, June 2003.)
Instead of helping people to heal from this most terrible event PCG's leaders chose to agree with Osama bin Laden and use him to make people feel guilty for doing things PCG's leaders disapprove of by blaming them for causing 9/11 to happen.

Osama bin Laden and the murderers associated with him are responsible for what happened on 9/11. No one else.

Also why trust one capable of doing something so monstrous? The victims were of all ethnicities and religions. Over thirty of the victims were Muslims. Many of them Bangladeshis who worked in a restaurant. Why is it PCG's leaders never bothered to note this aspect of the atrocity? If Osama bin Laden was actually fighting for Muslims why did he murder them as well? Because he was not fighting for Islam. He was fighting to gain power for himself.

Imagine that. PCG presenting Osama bin Laden as an agreeing witness that America is sinful.

Here is the first example of this bizarre tendency dating from 2001.
This is a religious war! It has been declared, loud and strong, by one of its principle antagonists as such. In a videotaped message aired over Arabian television stations, Osama bin Laden said, “This war is primarily a religious war.” Appealing to Muslims worldwide, he said, “Rise in support of your religion. Islam is calling you” (Toronto Star, Nov. 4). This is the opposite message to the one President Bush is seeking to put across to those Muslim states he hopes to retain in the coalition against terrorism. (Ron Fraser, The Power of Religion, December 2001.)
Amazingly Fraser just trusts Osama bin Laden at face value and does not suspect that perhaps bin Laden was up to something else. Osama bin Laden portrayed himself as one who fought for Muslims. But this was not true. Osama bin Laden fought for himself in order to gain power. He exploited the Islamic religion to get more recruits who would fight, not for Islam, but for Osama bin Laden.

Here is another example.
In evaluating current events in light of these prophecies, the Trumpet’s purpose is not to condemn any religion. Yes—GODS LAW absolutely condemns the seething hatred and violence being cultivated among many Islamist groups. But realize this: YOUR BIBLE shows that God is in fact MORE ANGRY with the nations those groups are TARGETING! (Joel Hilliker, Is Islam a Threat?, March 2003.)
So PCG's God is at the time this article was written (March 2003) "MORE ANGRY" at Americans then towards those plotting that vile act of mass murder.

It seems as though those who follow PCG should be "MORE ANGRY" at the American victims for their sins than towards those responsible for committing the act of mass murder. How grotesque.

(More on Hilliker's article above may be seen in a previous post.)

Here is another example.
Whether that was his primary motive or not, Osama bin Laden justified the attack on the Twin Towers of New York City by pointing to the immorality prevalent in Western civilization—an immorality we are spreading throughout the world. The plain truth is, [PCG's] God sees the same immorality, the same sins, in our people that bin Laden saw. Yet any suggestion that America needed to repent of personal and national sins was met with overwhelming criticism from the majority of TV and talk-radio personalities, as well as most government officials.

These sins and many others are the reasons why God did not protect our nation from that terrorist attack. (Carl Hilliker, The Iraq Campaign and American Hypocrisy, June 2003.)
So PCG's God views Americans the same way as Osama bin Laden does. What blasphemous nonsense! Does this mean that PCG worships a "God" who is like Osama bin Laden?

Here is another example.
At the same time, we ignore the Creator God who prophesies throughout His Word that He punishes for such despicable sins. Even the most violent terrorists can see and are offended by our unparalleled immorality. Surely we must believe that God would also be offended. But our people don’t care. We have descended into a kind of spiritual madness. Only the worst kind of punishment can ever awaken us. The Great Tribulation is going to be the worst suffering ever. The punishment fits the crime. Never was there a greater need to awaken! ...

We prate about how good we are and sing “God Bless America”—but God is cursing America, Britain and the Jews in the Middle East. He will continue to do so until we see our black sins and repent.

One of the main motivations for terrorists attacking the U.S. on September 11 was the impact of our sick culture on the Arab world. God can punish us through evil men. ... That nation is Israel—primarily Britain and America today. They are hypocritical—evil people who say they are good. We talk about how good we are, but spiritually we are the sickest nations on this planet—considering the physical blessings God has given us. (Gerald Flurry, The Last Hour, Chapter 5, 2004, pp. 65-66.)
What garbage. How dare PCG's 1% try to blame innocent Americans for causing 9/11 simply by doing things PCG's 1% disapprove of.

What degraded nonsense. PCG's leaders say they know what is really happening and yet they said Osama bin Laden was right. They made no attempt to see if anything else might better explain his behavior. They even used that foul murderer to as supporting evidence that America is sinful.

Imagine that: PCG's leaders agreeing with Osama bin Laden. How grotesque.

Did HWA's Faith Healing Kill His Own Father?

This is the 1100th post for the Living Armstrongism blog. Thank you to all you readers for inspiring me to carry on.

***

HWA's anti-medicine superstition appears to have caused HWA to neglect seeking urgent medical attention for his own father after he got a heart attack when he died in 1933.

The chilling account may be seen in the Autobiography of Herbert W. Armstrong, Volume 1, Chapter 28.

Just take a look.
My Father's Death

Along about the 20th or 21st of April in that year of 1933 word came that my father was very ill. I asked Mr. Oberg to accompany me, and we hastened to his farm, between Oregon City and Molalla. Apparently we asked Mr. Ray to take the service till we returned.
So they are at the farm belonging to HWA's father. Let us see what happens at this farm.
Dad had suffered an acute attack of indigestion. We anointed and prayed for him. He seemed to recover at once.
Did they take to a doctor after this "acute attack of indigestion"? They did not as will be plainly seen later.
He [HWA's father] also had called for us because he wanted to be baptized. ...

That afternoon, his acute indigestion healed, but still needing rest and sleep to recover strength, we planned to go down to the river at the edge of his farm and baptize him the next day.

Late that afternoon, we all sang "Praise Him! Praise Him!" with my father's deep melodic bass voice ringing out. It was to be the last time he ever sang.

When we finished, he had tears in his eyes, and his face literally illuminated in a happy smile.

"It's just wonderful!" he exclaimed. "It's absolutely WONDERFUL!"

"What do you mean, Dad?" I asked.

"That God at last has forgiven all my sins!" he exclaimed. "It seems like a load of many tons has been rolled off of my shoulders -- and I don't have to carry that weight of guilt around any longer!"

We left him to rest.

A while later we were called back into the room. He had sunken into a coma, not from indigestion, but a heart attack.
So HWA's father "had sunken into a coma ... from ... a heart attack."

And is this the part when HWA quickly took his own father to the hospital so he could get urgently needed medical attention because of a heart attack? Or get a doctor? What did HWA do?
We anointed and prayed for him again. We put him to bed in an adjoining bedroom.
So we see that HWA's own father had a heart attack but instead of taking the father to hospital he was simply placed in a bed. Let us see what happens next.
We noticed his feet were swelling. He did not come out of the coma. We kept up an all-night vigil of prayer. The swelling continued up his legs.
Dawn came. We continued praying. I know that I continued believing. By this time we had been granted many miraculous answers to prayer, and I felt I never had more faith in my life.
So let's break this down a bit.

(1) HWA's father had a heart attack and is unconscious.

(2) They did not take him to a hospital for a heart attack.

(3) They placed him in a bed at home.

(4) They then prayed over him all night.

(5) While praying over him they note that his condition is getting worse.

(6) Even at dawn they still do not take him to hospital or even get a doctor.

(7) They are still praying over him.

(8) There is no indication that HWA's unconscious father is getting medical attention for a heart attack in all this time.

(8) HWA is still confident his father will be physically healed. He says that, "I felt I never had more faith in my life."

So what happens after all that?
Yet, at 9:40 that morning, the day after he entered his 70th year, my father died. I was stunned. This I could not believe!
After this HWA is confused.
Suddenly I was confused, bewildered. I knew that God had given His written PROMISE to heal. Always before, since learning this truth, God had healed all in our family. I realized that there are two conditions -- obedience, and faith. But I had surrendered fully and unconditionally to God's commandments, given my life to Him and His service. And I had believed with positive conviction. There had been no wavering -- no doubt -- just calm ASSURANCE.
For three days I was in a mental fog. Not that I began to lose faith in God, or the reality of Biblical promises. Not that doubts began to be entertained.
After three days HWA is able to reconcile this failed attempt at faith healing. Is this the part where HWA realizes he should have taken his father to the hospital?
... for God's own reason and purpose, the fulfilling of the promise is delayed UNTIL THE RESURRECTION! In like manner, I could now understand that God has PROMISED to heal -- but He has not promised how immediately, or by what manner, He will do it. I knew, now, that my father's healing is still absolutely SURE. He will be resurrected -- HEALED!
Astoundingly, despite this experience, HWA chose not to stop acting on his anti-medicine superstition but continued to promote his anti-medicine superstition after this. HWA's anti-medicine superstition led him to neglect his father in his fatal illness. Instead of getting urgent medical attention to him for a heart attack HWA and those with him simply prayed over him all night while seeing his condition deteriorate. There is no indication here that they sought medical treatment for HWA's after having a heart attack.

HWA then ends this account of his father's death.
The net result of this shocking experience of my father's death was a great strengthening of FAITH. I hope sincerely that the recording of this experience will strengthen the faith of many readers. ... The only reason I am continuing with this autobiography is the hope that many readers may learn lessons God intends them to learn, through these recorded experiences.
Till his death in 1986 HWA continued to promote his anti-medicine superstition. Many people suffered health problems or even died because of this anti-medicine superstition.

This doctrine of death continues to be preached among some the COG splinter groups to this day with the same disastrous and perfectly predictable results.

Reading PCG's Booklet, Russia and China in Prophecy

Let us now read Andrew Locher, Ron Fraser and Stephen Flurry's booklet, Russia and China in Prophecy. This booklet was first released in 1999. It was later revised in 2001, 2003, 2009 and 2013. For this post I am reading through the 2003 version of this booklet. The booklet was drastically changed, expended and revised in 2009. The current booklet is very different from the 2003 version.

Let us see what they have to say
The Soviet Union has dissolved. China remains isolated from the rest of the world. Yet these two great nations possess tremendous resources and manpower. Where do these two nations fit in an ever-changing geopolitical arena? (Introduction.)
What on Earth do they mean, writing in 1999-2003, that China is isolated? Since China opened up to the world market under Deng Xiaopeng after Mao's death China has engaged in all kinds of commercial dealings with nations from all over the world. How can PCG's leaders say that China is isolated? What fanciful nonsense. This shows once again how detached from reality PCG's leaders actually are about this and many things.

Chapter 1: The Emerging Asian Superpower

This chapter was written by Andrew Locher and Ron Fraser.
At the same time, understanding the history of these peoples will help us identify certain character traits that resurface even in modern times. (p. 2.)
In other words certain peoples are stereotyped as behaving in certain ways. How is that not racist?
By April 1997, China, Russia, Tojikstan [sic], Kozokhstan [sic] and Kyrgyzstan met to sign an accord in Moscow on troop reduction and security-building measures along the 4,700 mile border between China and the former Soviet Union. (p. 4.)
What attention to detail this shows. Somehow PCG's leaders misspelled those two names. How can this be taken seriously? They cannot even spell these names correctly.
China’s record on human rights is an ongoing cause of concern for U.S. officials. (pp. 5-6.)
The issue of human rights in China is a very serious issue. But this is the only time this issue is even mentioned in the 2003 version of this booklet. Large parts of this chapter is devoted to fear mongering that China is plotting to turn against the United States and fear mongering that peaceful economic activities "might" be used against the United States in a militaristic manner. That indicates that PCG's leaders have little concern about the human rights situation in China. Aside from this one pitiful sentence the writers of the 2003 version of this booklet show no concern for the human rights situation in China.

Now the current version is very different from the 2003 version discussed here. Here is how the current version of this booklet discuss the human rights situation in China.
Critics groused about China’s poor human rights, its authoritarianism, its support for corrupt regimes, its pollution. Correct as they are, their criticisms simply aren’t going to stop this bullet train. This country is barreling into the future—and, in the process, changing the world. (Russia and China in Prophecy, 2013 version, Chapter 3, p. 28.)
Here criticism of human rights violations are actually belittled as useless. Again PCG's leaders seem to have no concern about those who suffer because of the human rights situation in China.

We now return back to the 2003 version of this booklet.
As Sino-American relations sour, look for China to turn to Russia for the remaining help it needs to become a superpower on the world stage. (p. 8.)
PCG predicts that Russia and China will become close allies. But considering the many other failed predictions PCG has made since 1989 it will be seen that PCG's leaders have no special insight into future events.

They cite the fall of the Berlin Wall as a sign their prophecies will soon be fulfilled and twenty-five years later we are still waiting for Europe to conquer America. This prophecy failed.

For many years PCG's leaders said that Egypt would be taken over by the Muslim Brotherhood. They were very excited to see the Muslim Brotherhood ascend to power and gain the presidency in 2012. They failed to foresee that the Muslim Brotherhood would be ousted from power and then bloddily crushed with the loss of at least 638 lives in 2013. PCG's prophecy failed miserably.

So PCG cannot see into the future. They are just as baffled by world events as the rest of us.
Other diplomatic agitation stems from Russia’s continued military and economic support of rogue nations such as Syria, North Korea and Iran. Russia and China have each invested funds and technology to develop nuclear reactors within Iran. Diplomats argue the nuclear plants are civilian in purpose—a preposterous claim, considering Iran’s abundant source of oil for fuel. (p. 8.)
This booklet was published in 1999. Sixteen years later we are still waiting for Iran to build a nuclear weapon. It is almost as though they actually do not want one. It has been reported that Iran's Supreme Leader made a fatwa in 2003 condemning nuclear weapons as unislamic. Considering that detail PCG's leaders might have to wait a long time for Iran to get nuclear weapons.

And Syria is now a war zone and no one knows if the infamous Assad regime will even survive.
Economic discrepancies also drive these two former foes apart. Unable to make payments on existing loans, Russia is drowning in debt with little hope for a turnaround. If the Russian economic situation is to improve, foreign investment must increase—a fact which has not escaped the investment-conscious Germans. Russia is still rich in natural resources and commodities, yet they lack the infrastructure to compete in the cut-throat Western world. (p. 10.)
However over time Russia was able to recover economically. This is yet another failed prophecy. Even if we called this a "forecast" it is still a hopelessly inaccurate speculation of Russia's state of affairs.
Both [Russia and China] share common defense concerns, which include radical Islam in and around Central Asia, expanding Western power in NATO and the prospect of taking advantage of a creeping U.S. isolationism. (p. 10.)
In the days leading up to 9/11 PCG was prophesying that the United States was becoming "isolationist". And yet so soon afterwards 9/11 happened and the United States went to war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Clearly PCG's leaders cannot predict the future.

Chapter 2: Russia and China in Prophecy

This chapter was written by Andrew Locher and Stephen Flurry.
Rather than let the Communists have the advantage of striking first, the beast will turn its full attention to the north and to the east of Jerusalem and launch a pre-emptive strike. (p. 18.)
Even though this booklet was first published in 1999 Russia is still described as Communist.
Most Bible critics argue that it would be impossible for an army this size to assemble. Yet consider the numbers. The current population in China is over 1.2 billion. In Russia it’s nearly 150 million. These two countries alone, not counting other nations which would most likely join this alliance, such as Japan and the former Soviet republics, total a population of 1.35 billion people from which to make up an army of 200 million. (pp. 18-19.)
Bizarrely Andrew Locher and Stephen Flurry constantly refer to Russia and China as "Communist". Even though Russia threw off Communist rule in the turbulent events of 1991 Russia is still called Communist according to Andrew Locher and Stephen Flurry.

The current 2013 version has since removed these bizarre words. But people deserve to know that as late as 2003 this booklet by PCG was still referring to Russia as "Communist".
God is behind this Communist counterattack. They spare nothing. The Russians and Chinese both possess nuclear weaponry. When we read about the level of destruction upon Babylon (“to slay the third part of men”), there can be no doubt that they will be attacked with nuclear weapons! (p. 21.)
The words above prove that when a "Communist counterattack" is mentioned Andrew Locher and Stephen Flurry mean the Russians as well. The fact that the Communist Party of the Soviet Union was kicked out of power in 1991 seems to be of no relevance to them.
The second woe is the Communist counterattack. ... Verse 16, as we have seen, says there will be 200 million men in the massive Communist army. (p. 25.)

And, difficult as it may be to believe, what’s left of the beast power and Communist Asia will actually gather to fight against Christ! (p. 26.)
Only four countries in all Asia can be labeled as Communist, namely China, Vietnam, Laos and North Korea. The fact that all the other countries in Asia are not Communist is ignored. How deluded these words are!
In Revelation 16:12, we see that God dries up the Euphrates River to prepare the way for the Communist hordes to gather with what remains of the beast power, near Jesus Christ in Jerusalem. (p. 26.)

With the Millennium only just begun, and Jesus Christ ruling the world from His throne in Jerusalem, Communist Asia musters its forces for one final attempt to overthrow Christ’s rule. (p. 27.)
The fact that Russia is described as "Communist" here only demonstrates once again how out of touch with reality PCG's leaders are. What a strange fantasy world PCG's leaders talk of here.
Ezekiel 13 describes problems with ministers of God’s people. These lukewarm ministers bring false messages, conjured up by themselves (vv. 1-10). Our books The Ezekiel Watchman and Malachi’s Message more thoroughly explain the meaning of these prophecies. God is speaking against the prophets and priests of Israel who cry “Peace; and there was no peace” (v. 10). This is a common cry today, which is almost always followed by a breach in that peace—witness Israel, Ireland and Bosnia. (p. 28.)
Yet another false prophecy. Since the Dayton Agreements of 1995 Bosnia has thankfully been spared from warfare. Although all sides are dissatisfied with the result they have no fought each other again all these years later.

Also since peace was made in Northern Ireland in 1998 the people of Northern Ireland have been spared from further mass violence. While no doubt tensions remain it has not fallen into a state of chronic turmoil again.

And as for Israel the situation is unfortunately still very tense over there. But if tensions can be managed so effectively in Bosnia and Ireland then why not hope that a similar peace can very well be established in the Holy Land? May peace soon come to the Holy Land.
This passage is astounding! It is common to think that after Christ returns, peace and abundance will overflow throughout the Earth immediately. But that is not what the Bible teaches. There will still exist those who haven’t submitted to God’s law and government. They will learn the “hard way” that God’s system is the only one that will yield such blessings in life! (p. 31.)
The only reason why it seems to Andrew Locher and Stephen Flurry that "It is common to think that after Christ returns, peace and abundance will overflow throughout the Earth immediately" is because that is what the leaders of PCG have been constantly telling their followers. Very often this detail of PCG dogma is often ignored when talking about how peace is to come only after Christ returns. This is clearly seen from these words by Gerald Flurry in his 2004 booklet, The Last Hour.
The last hour has struck. At the end of this hour Jesus Christ will return. The Earth and universe will know only peace, joy and abundance from that time forward! Nothing even remotely like it has ever occurred before. The Family of God will rule this Earth and the universe. Can your mind fully comprehend that this universe-shaking event is only an “hour” away? (Gerald Flurry, The Last Hour, Chapter 8, p. 92.)
Such details are simply not dwelt on by PCG's leaders.

(Incidentally Chapter 8 of The Last Hour is entitled "The Elder". In that booklet Gerald Flurry is identifying himself as the elder. This is connected with Gerald Flurry proclaiming himself to be That Prophet.)
It is true that some of the Communist hordes will gather at Armageddon and be destroyed during the third woe when Christ returns—but not all. The rest of these rebellious forces will descend upon the glorious land a short time after it has been occupied by the regathered Israelites (it will only be a land of villages at this point early on in the Millennium). (p. 31.)
It is amazing how Andrew Locher and Stephen Flurry so casually assure the reader that the Holy Land at that time "will only be a land of villages at this point early on in the Millennium". They are so sure they understand even little details like that. And this is done right after constantly misidentifying Russia as Communist.

It is also worth noting that Russia is again described as Communist.

The booklet ends with the following words. Here we see the real purpose of this booklet.
God wants us to choose life! He doesn’t want to inflict His wrath—but He will if we force Him to do so. Do we believe this is all going to happen? Will we listen to God’s warning message from His true Church? If history is any indication, probably not. God’s prophets and ministers have almost always stood alone. But they have stood with God!

Where will you stand? (p. 33.)
In other words the whole point of this booklet is to persuade the reader to join PCG.

And so we reach the end of this recruitment booklet.

It is noteworthy to mention that Japan is rarely mentioned in this booklet. Although it is assumed that Japan will be with Russia and China in this future alliance it is rarely discussed. When this booklet was greatly revised in 2009 a chapter written by Gareth Fraser and Ron Fraser completely devoted to Japan was included. PCG has a long history of demonizing Japan.

Also there is no mention of Iran, which PCG teaches is the King of the South. As mentioned previously it appears that PCG rarely fear mongered about Iran until 9/11. PCG says that Gerald Flurry dogmatically proclaimed Iran to be the King of the South in 1994 but this dogma was rarely mentioned in PCG's writings until 9/11. The fact that Iran is never mentioned in this booklet provides further evidence of that.

Here is where one may read the current 2013 version of this booklet. But I strongly emphasize it is very different from the 2003 version discussed here. It is practically another booklet.

It is now sixteen years since this booklet was published. Russia and China are still not planning to attack Europe. PCG are still false prophets. There is no need to listen to them.

Reading PCG's Booklet, Education With Vision

Let us now read Stephen Flurry's booklet, Education With Vision. This booklet was first printed in 2003. It has since been republished in 2007 and 2009. In this booklet Stephen Flurry says you need "spiritual knowledge", which is an attempt to get readers interested in and eventually convinced that PCG is the one true church and must be supported by giving PCG money. Here I am reading the original 2003 version of this booklet. You can read the current 2009 version of this booklet on their website.

Parts of this booklet are from a February 2001 article by Stephen Flurry which was entitled 'Education With Vision' which was published to celebrate and advertize the opening of PCG's Imperial College. (Now renamed Herbert W. Armstrong College.)

Loaded Language

One of the ways authoritarian groups are able to gain recruits is to "load the language". They use familiar words but then use it in a specific way that only follow members understand. There is an added meaning to the word or phrase not immediately apparent to outsiders. This loaded language is designed to shut down critical thinking and force the reader to view things in a very specific and narrow manner.

This booklet is filled with loaded language:

"Spiritual knowledge". In the booklet described as something vitally necessary but lacking outside of PCG. Actually refers to PCG dogmas and the conviction that PCG is the one true church.

"Material knowledge" In the booklet described as everything else aside from "spiritual knowledge". Not defined as bad in itself. But it is vehemently insisted that one unaware of PCG's teachings ("spiritual knowledge") is severely lacking in understanding the world they way it should be, meaning from the viewpoint of PCG's 1%.

"Physical knowledge". Same as "material knowledge"

"True education". That is to be taught PCG's dogmas by PCG.

"Foundation". This is loaded with the strong connotation that one is unable to view things as they truly are unless he or she is well versed in "spiritual knowledge", namely PCG dogma.

"God's vision". In this booklet it is a euphemism for PCG dogma.

"Rationalism". Here this word is redefined to mean rebellion against PCG's God. It is insinuated that failure to have "spiritual knowledge", namely by not conforming to the many rules and dictates of PCG's leaders, is a major cause for the many problems facing the world today.

This booklet is filled with loaded language designed to make the reader convinced that he or she needs to learn what PCG teaches. Essentially this booklet exploits the widespread desire to better oneself by gaining a College degree to try to gain more converts for PCG.

Chapter 1

Stephen Flurry recites the Tower of Babel. He cites The Jamieson, Fausset and Brown Commentary but really he should have cited The Two Babylons by Alexander Hyslop. Armstrongism has long been fixated on the Tower of Babel, partly due to the influence of Hyslop's 1850s anti-Catholic screed.

Stephen Flurry insinuates that all knowledge outside of PCG is tainted. This is done to make it seem absolutely necessary to join PCG.
Rationalism, nihilism, value relativism and academic freedom are all terms that essentially mean no boundaries! And the first students to pursue this type of education were Adam and Eve. For 6,000 years now, the rest of mankind has followed suit. (p. 13.)
Again Stephen Flurry is redefining those terms in a narrow sense in order to prop up his contention that only PCG has "true education" and therefore must be joined.
Anciently, the great scholars in Greece and Rome placed great impetus on constantly gaining new knowledge—some new thing. Both of those empires eventually crumbled. In the United States today, many of the most prestigious schools are located in an environment of moral and social decay. And like those great empires before us, we will also eventually topple as a society, unless we come to realize that education is not something you go out and get! It’s a way of life. But the “great” educators of this society are ignorant of this fact. And their masses of pupils never stop to question their educational methods. (p. 14.)
Infamously HWA's Ambassador College was not accredited. So its degrees were not recognized outside of WCG. Contrary to HWA's many claims to the contrary the purpose of Ambassador College was to build up a hierarchy of like minded individuals who would devotedly work for HWA.

Also PCG's own college is not accredited as well. This was recently confirmed by The Journal.

Could this be why Stephen Flurry here redefines education as "a way of life"? His college cannot give accredited degrees. But this fact is never mentioned in this booklet.

Chapter 2

Note the loaded language which is highlighted below. This booklet is filled with such terminology.
So we see from the earliest point in man’s history that he had to know how to deal with things (physical knowledge), and how to get along with God and other people (spiritual knowledge). Acquiring the physical knowledge is possible because of the human spirit created in man. The spiritual knowledge, however, comes only through help from a spiritual being—that is, revelation from God. To become truly educated, man needs both kinds of knowledge! (p. 21.)
In plain language the author of this booklet is trying to make the reader feel inadequate and think that he or she desperately needs this "spiritual knowledge" the booklet promises to provide. All this jargon filled talk is designed to get more people to join PCG and gain more tithes paying members.

On page 22 is a one page insert. In it is the following paragraph.
Do you know one of the biggest mistakes people of religion make? They assume the Bible was written merely to inform the mind when in fact God wrote it to change your mind! Only a fraction of mankind even bothers to read the Bible, let alone apply the words of the world’s best seller. True education is nothing if not the persistent and determined training of the mind to think, act and reason like the mind of God. (p. 22.)
In plain words "true education" is loaded with the added meaning of learning about and then submitting to PCG's teachings and joining it. That is what the "true education" this booklet advertizes actually is, an attempt to get more converts for PCG.
God’s revelation [Here this is a loaded term referring to PCG's dogmas - Redfox712.] is the foundation of all knowledge. It’s not all knowledge—just what’s most important. The Bible is like a magnificent summary of the way our Creator thinks. Yet very few people—even those who consider themselves religious—actually study it. (p. 24.)
And so we see how this booklet redefines PCG's dogmas as "the foundation of all knowledge" and "just what's most important." In other words this booklet is trying to get the reader to join PCG.
Those who ignore this magnificent summary, however, miss out on the most important element of their education. They fail to grasp the basic premise of Scripture—that from cover to cover, it is a book about law. It is the Instruction Manual God sent along with His handiwork—human beings. Its instruction tells us how to live.

Though men have tried and tried to produce their own instruction manuals, nothing even remotely compares to or supersedes God’s inspired Word. The Holy Bible is the indispensable building block of any true and right education. (p. 24.)
Unlike most Christian churches PCG (along with the other COG groups descended from HWA) insists that the Old Testament laws are still in force for Christians (PCG members). They worship on the Sabbath (Friday sunset to Saturday sunset) and observe the festivals described in Leviticus 23. These practices are not mentioned by Stephen Flurry in this booklet.
This is the well-balanced education Mr. Armstrong later established at Ambassador College. Early in his life, Mr. Armstrong learned that education is not something you go out and get. It’s a way of life! Education is rightly developed character. This is not to say that all college courses are wrong. But a college degree does not make you educated. (p. 31.)
Note how Stephen Flurry subtly denigrates getting a college degree. Is this an oblique reference to the fact that PCG's own College is unaccredited?

What is not mentioned here is that later on HWA was given honorary degrees. If having a degree is so meaningless then why did HWA himself get an honorary degree?
As an indication of where we have arrived as an “educated” society, one only needs to compare the role models and wise counselors children looked up to years ago, with those they look up to now. Yesterday’s role models, like Jesus Christ, Abraham, David, Paul, Ben Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill and Herbert Armstrong, could hardly be compared with the athletes and rock stars most teens worship today. Neither can the wisdom and counsel of parents, relatives or the elderly, be compared with the instruction most young people now seek from their peers.

Living in an immoral society where the family is disintegrating makes the acquisition of a proper education difficult. It can be done. But if you are to be educated, you are going to have to seek after that spark of ambition and then drive yourself with all the will and determination of a great warrior. (pp. 32-33.)
More condemnation of mainstream society. Mainstream society is denigrated in order to make PCG look more attractive.

We now continue. Note the loaded language highlighted in the next quote.
1) Build a solid spiritual foundation. We were put on Earth to become educated in spiritual and material knowledge. Unless proper spiritual knowledge is our foundation in life, everything will be established on the wrong premise. (p. 33.)
In other words Stephen Flurry is insinuating that it is necessary for one to have "spiritual knowledge" which, in this booklet, is a loaded term for believing that only PCG is the one true church and that one must join it and pay the three tithes that Stephen Flurry lives on.
It does require much sacrifice to follow God. But notice what Christ promises to those who do .... We’ll receive much more even now! Seek first the Kingdom, and “all these things” will be added (Matthew 6:33). This is a promise. There is a definite correlation between physical and spiritual prosperity. (p. 37.)
And so we see Stephen Flurry insinuating that having "spiritual knowledge" (that is, becoming convinced that PCG is right and acting accordingly by joining them) will grant physical blessings as well. For many people struggling to make a living this promise of physical blessings upon gaining "spiritual knowledge" from PCG will make joining PCG seem an attractive option.

Some wonder why so many stay in PCG despite the many problems there. Partly it is because they are told by their leaders that some kind of blessing will be theirs for the taking if only they stay within PCG.

Chapter 3

But if the educational institutions outside of PCG are so terrible then Stephen Flurry must think there is a positive educational institution he wishes to promote. And indeed there is. Namely PCG's Imperial College, which was later renamed Herbert W. Armstrong College. And Stephen Flurry uses this chapter to promote it.
True education is a life-long process. It’s about realizing your incredible human potential. That cannot be accomplished in school or in college alone. But with God’s vision as a foundation, those few years of college can certainly serve as a springboard for greater success and happiness in life. (p. 44.)
Infamously Ambassador College was not accredited during HWA's time. And PCG's Herbert W. Armstrong College is unaccredited as well.

Stephen Flurry ends his booklet with the following words.
Imperial College of Edmond is but a small foretaste of what colleges will be like in the World Tomorrow. It’s not like other colleges and universities today—those institutions suffocating under the increasing pressure of gross materialism, godless science and politically correct nonsense. Imperial College’s uniqueness is best summed up by the school motto: “Education with vision.” (p. 44.)
In other words Stephen Flurry is advertizing for his college. It's advertizing. Education outside of PCG's control is denigrated to get people to join PCG or even go to their (unaccredited) College.

February 2001 issue.
And so this loaded jargon filled, advertizing booklet comes to an end.

Cliven Bundy Standoff Reveals PCG's Extremism

Back in April 2014 one Cliven Bundy gathered up a bunch of fervent extremist anti-government militia members to get back his cattle from Bureau of Land Management employees after they had been seized in lieu of his refusal to pay taxes for using public land for grazing in a long running dispute. They intimidated the BLM personnel by apparently pointing loaded guns at them and placed snipers in the area to intimidate the federal agents. This armed stand off could easily have turned deadly. Thankfully that did not happen. The BLM chose to retreat in order to prevent violence. The cattle was seized from the BLM personnel. Among his sympathizers it seemed as though they had gained victory in this matter. One account of this incident may seen in War in the West: The Bundy Ranch Standoff and the American Radical Right by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which includes comments from an interview with the man who organized the militia with Cliven Bundy.

But soon after that Cliven Bundy said racist things about African Americans and many of those who previously chose to sympathize with him promptly disassociated themselves from him refusing to accept his racism.

But not PCG.

Soon after the publication of his racist comment PCG's Robert Morley wrote an article in which he chose to sympathize with Cliven Bundy. Morley made it clear he did not agree with everything Bundy said but he decided to portray Bundy as the victim of "the big media" even when so many of Bundy's sympathizers had already disassociated themselves from him because of those racist comments.
But is Bundy really the evil, cold-hearted racist he is made out to be? If you look at what he actually said, in a strange way, he seems to be trying to take the side of African Americans—blaming government policy as a root cause for many of the social and economic problems experienced by black communities. ...
Did Bundy say some offensive things? No doubt. But is he a racist? I don’t know. I never met the man. The New York Times writer vilifying him doesn’t know either. Nor do all the media outlets and talk show hosts that jumped all over his comments. I do know that the full transcript of his speech doesn’t indicate that he is.

But what the big media is doing is drawing attention away from the important issues like states’ rights, increasingly militarized government agencies and the government’s role in family breakdown and the welfare state—all important topics raised by Bundy, at a time he was getting a lot of national coverage. Race baiting changed the national dialogue, heightened polarization and stirred up a lot of anger. (Robert Morley, How the Media Inflamed the Bundy Ranch Standoff, May 5, 2014.)
This shows just how far to the right PCG's leadership actually is. So many rightists chose to disassociate themselves from Cliven Bundy by this time and here we see PCG choosing to stand up for Cliven Bundy. Bundy was portrayed as the victim of "the big media" when what really hurt him was that so many rightists wanted no more to do him.

Although considering that PCG teaches that interracial marriage is sinful it is little surprise that PCG's leaders would choose to make light of Cliven Bundy's comment.

MUST READ: Is Gerald Flurry Praising Deaths by Medical Neglect?

This is disgusting. Is this what Gerald Flurry sees when he sees a PCG member dies because he or she refuse to take medicine because of fear caused by HWA's anti-medicine superstition?
This is REAL, ABUNDANT LIVINGEVEN IF WE ARE DYING PHYSICALLY! Over the years in my ministry, I have seen a few people physically rot right before my eyes and yet remain loyal to God every step of the way to the end! Though it must be one of the most grotesque sights to see, at the same time it is one of the MOST MAJESTICALLY NOBLE examples ever on Earth, from God’s point of view! If someone is being loyal in circumstances like that, he or she is BEARING WITNESS OF THE FATHER! What a precious, extraordinary beauty that is! I know I will see those people again, and they will live FOREVER AND EVER! When resurrected, they won’t remember that trial for very long. They will have ETERNAL LIFE!

Are you prepared to trust God to heal you, now or in the resurrection? Well done, good and faithful servant, He will say if we trust Him to the end. (Gerald Flurry, The Last Hour, 2004, 2007, Chapter 5, p. 54.)
This is clearly talking about refusing to take medicine. HWA taught this doctrine of death. Many people died or were physically impaired by this doctrine of death.

And here is Gerald Flurry wallowing in this deadly doctrine.

Gerald Flurry thinks people dying due to medical neglect is "one of the MOST MAJESTICALLY NOBLE examples ever on Earth".

My word! What madness! This is absolutely frightening.

Is this why Garth MacDonald died in 2006?

Words fail me.
